The Going Down of the Sun

The Going Down of the Sun

The west coast of Golden Bay is a wild and dramatic place which contrasts with the mostly calm and serene nature of the beaches enclosed by Farewell Spit and Separation Point. Here, severe wind and wave activity have carved huge off-shore arches, stone bridges and caverns and caves from the coastal cliffs. Massive sand-dunes have formed from the large volumes of sand carried up the coast on tidal currents. On a calm, sunny day it is so hard to believe the forces of the elements that resulted in this dramatic landscape. We love to watch the sun go down along this coastline. Our happy places are near the Anatori River, Kahurangi Point, Patarau and Te Hapu where the sun often sets over a tempest sea.
