The Ahuriri River in the Otago region of the South Island of NZ, rises in the Southern Alps below Mt Huxley and flows between Lakes Ohau and Hawea. The headwaters of the Ahuriri are on the eastern flanks of the Southern Alps. The river flows for 70 kilometres through the southernmost part of the Mackenzie Basin before reaching Lake Benmore, one of the lakes in the Waitaki hydroelectric project. We discovered this beautiful river valley in May 2007 when we did a campervan trip through Central Otago.
