‘Late in the Day’ is one of a series of Arthur’s Pass paintings I did following a trip we did last winter, when we drove from the West Coast of the South Island through the very icy and picturesque Arthur’s Pass en route to Christchurch. We spent a memorable few days at the Bealey River, where I photographed and sketched some of the most dramatic scenery I have seen in NZ. This is late afternoon view of the Waimakariri River flanked by towering peaks of the Southern Alps.
