On a hot, dry summer’s day in February, I decided to explore Sam’s Creek, a small tributary of the Cobb River. Within minutes of leaving the road and climbing up the steep, near-dry creek-bed, I was completely enchanted. I felt as if I had been transposed to another world….this was real ‘Lord of the Rings’ country! The sheer size of rocky gorge, thick mosses and lichens covering huge boulders, and the dense vegetation, contrasting with the rich emerald coloured water. This was a scene just begging to be painted! Surely this wasn’t the Sam’s Creek that has been ear-marked for gold and mineral exploration by an international mining company???
