I have a personal list of special plants that for me typify the ‘kiwi’ landscape. The knarly, wind-swept form of the Kanuka tree would feature near the top. This tree colonises the coastal fringes and forms a smooth dune-top forest that absorbs most of the searing salt-laden wind before it reaches the inland forests. These timeless, weathered trees along with other ancient forests form the relics of our relatively new country. The delicate, soft and subtle form of the fantail (Piwakawaka) contrasts perfectly with strong, resilient form of the Kanuka.
