Down the Track
The weathered marble formations, caves and sink holes of the karst landscape are a very familiar sight when you drive into Canaan Downs from the Takaka Hill. The road leads to the start of the track to Harwood's Hole which is part of one of the most well known caving systems in this area and at 183m deep it is the deepest vertical shaft in NZ. The track into Harwood's Hole winds through stunning rock formations and magical forest. On a misty morning it's the perfect place for fairy spotting.
