These plump little birds were introduced into NZ in the 1800s. Originally from California, they thrive in our environment and often nest in our gardens. When the eggs hatch we have large convoys of tiny striped fluff balls tearing around with multiple adults guarding their every movement. They have to run the gauntlet of wekas and hawks but many make it to adulthood. Such a delightful addition to our garden menagerie.
