The basin containing Lake Sylvester in the Cobb area of Kahurangi National Park is a fine example of a glacial cirque. It is placed in a dramatic alpine setting. In a very cold winter the lake freezes but even in mid-summer the water temperature is icy cold. When I painted this scene the lake was still partially frozen and the shallows were just beginning to thaw. You can almost feel the chill in the air when you look at this painting!
