Lake Sylvester, in Kahurangi National Park is just one of the many small cirques (glacial basins) in the Cobb Valley and Tablelands. The track to Lake Sylvester zig-zags up through the beech forest from the Cobb Reservoir, and levels off as it approaches the tussock-covered alpine tops. From here it is just a short walk to the new Sylvester Hut, built by Alec Bensemann in 2002. The new hut replaces the old Bushline Hut that was set in a cold valley that seldom saw the sun in winter. The Sylvester Hut has a commanding view of the Tablelands and the Arthur Range and I am sure there is no better place than this, to see the sunrise.
