The Lay of the Land

The Lay of the Land

Golden Bay has a rich natural landscape and I'm often fascinated by the forces which shape the coastline, the land and vegetation. The West Coast of Golden Bay is a wild and dramatic place. Here, severe wind and wave activity have carved huge off-shore arches, stone bridges and caverns and caves from the coastal cliffs. Massive sand-dunes have formed from the large volumes of sand carried up the coast on tidal currents. On a calm day it is so hard to believe the forces of the elements that resulted in such a dramatic landscape. This macrocarpa tree clings tenaciously to a sand dune alongside the track to Cape Farewell.
