The Tide is Turning

The Tide is Turning

April 22, Earth Day marks the anniversary of the birth of the modern environmental movement in 1970. It was originally inspired by action to protect oceans after a massive oil spill off the coast of Santa Barbara, California in 1969. Now Earth Day is a massive global event involving over 1 billion people in 193 countries with the aim of raising awareness about a number of urgent environmental issues, especially the threat of climate change, our oceans in peril, and the need for clean renewable energy sources. Our oceans are close to breaking point from over-fishing, habitat destruction, climate change and pollution. The oceans are the world’s largest ecosystem, home to 80% of the planet’s biodiversity, and account for more than 97% of its water. They produce nearly half the planet’s oxygen too. Lose the oceans and we lose everything. Peter painted 'The Tide is Turning' with these issues in mind. Maybe you will be inspired to think about your own impact on the ocean.
