‘Towards the Headwaters of the Waimakariri River’ is the first painting in a series I plan to complete from our 2008 May campervan trip. We drove from Christchurch through Arthur's Pass, to Wanaka through the Haast Pass and back to the Canterbury high country exploring as many gravel roads and back-country routes as we could find. We spent our first night up this valley where I photographed and sketched as the sun came up. This is a morning view looking towards the headwaters of Waimakariri River flanked by towering peaks of the Southern Alps.
