Situated at the extreme northern tip of the South Island, Farewell Spit stretches more than 30 kilometres into the Tasman Sea and is an area of outstanding natural beauty and a bird sanctuary of international significance. With open sea on one side and sheltered waters on the other, this massive sandspit has two entirely different faces. We enjoy our winter walks on the wild west coast side where the sand-dunes are huge and dynamic, and if you walk far enough you can find beautiful inland lakes. Farewell Spit is the longest sand spit in NZ and I'm sure the most paintable.
