Our nearest neighbours are several families of noisy, boisterous tui. They feast on nectar from our kowhai and harakeke flowers in the spring, and in summer enjoy native berries, my peaches and nectarines while in the autumn they indulge in figs, grapes and feijoas. EarthSea is commonly known amongst local tui as heaven. They aggressively guard their daily sugar-water from thieving bellbirds and we are rewarded by their beautiful repertoire and the occasional pose like the one which inspired this painting.
