The Cobb Valley in Kahurangi National Park is an exceptionally beautiful and interesting place. It has a rich history and it is of great interest to geologists and naturalists. The country’s oldest fossils are found here as well as a wide variety of unusual rocks and minerals. So many local people hold the Cobb area close to their hearts. Many lives are entwined in its rich history, be it the construction of the Dam and Power Station or involvement with the North-West Nelson Forest Park. ‘When Morning Comes’ was painted from near the Dam wall looking up the glacial valley. The perfect reflection of the Peel Range in the dam is often seen early in the morning before the wind comes up. The hut on the left-hand side belongs to the Acclimatisation Society and is used by trout fisherman keen enough to brave the voracious sandflies and chilly mornings.
